Background Information | Wnt-1, also known as Proto-oncogene Wnt-1 or Proto-oncogene Int-1 homolog, was first identified as a proto-oncogene activated by viral insertion in mouse mammary tumors. The Wnt-1 gene encodes a member of a large family of secreted proteins that are cysteine-rich, glycosylated, and poorly soluble. Wnt-1 serves as a ligand for the RYK coreceptor, resulting in Wnt signaling. The Wnt signalling pathway mediates the levels of cytosolic beta-catenin, a multi-functional protein that associates with membrane-bound E-cadherin as well as several DNA-binding proteins, such as members of the TCF/LEF family. Additionally, it serves a ligand for members of the frizzled family of seven transmembrane receptors and plays a role in development of the central nervous system. |
